Nancy Crampton Brophy, 71, was found guilty of second-degree murder on May 25 after a seven-week trial. Her sentence includes the possibility of release on parole after 25 years of detention. Prosecutors say Crampton Brophy fatally shot Dan Brophy, 63, inside the now-closed Oregon Medical Institute where he worked in 2018 because he stood to get money from paying for his life insurance. Crampton Brophy’s attorney argued that the state figures were occasional and disputed allegations of financial problems. They also brought witnesses who testified about the strong and beloved relationship of the couple. Crampton Brophy took the position and said that she and her husband had both bought life insurance policies as part of their retirement plan and had a plan to reduce their debt. She also said that her research into ghost weapons was in the process of preparing for a future novel. The essay contained details on various ways to commit an unsolved murder and avoid arrest. But Circuit Judge Christopher Ramras eventually ruled the case out of the trial, saying it was published in 2011. A prosecutor even mentioned the issues of the essay without naming it after Crampton Brophy took the position. She had been in custody since her arrest in September 2018.
