The fire, called Sheep Fire, broke out on Saturday amid hot temperatures and dry bones and strong winds continued to fuel the flames. By Sunday afternoon, the fire had reached at least 990 acres and was reduced by only 5%. Mandatory evacuations were issued for Desert Front Road, Wild Horse Canyon Road and the Wrightwood community – the evacuation order is for Highway 2 on Mesquite Street, Highway 138 in Sand Canyon and Wright Mountain Road on Lone Pine Canyon Road . In addition, there is an evacuation warning for all of Wrightwood, said the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. By Monday morning, the weather had improved significantly, allowing crews to create a more stable containment line around the fire, with the help of helicopter water drops. The Red Cross has opened an evacuation center at Serrano High School, located at 9292 Sheep Creek Road in the anonymous Phelan community. Small animals and pets can be transported to the Devore Animal Shelter located on the 19777 Shelter Way in San Bernardino. Highway 2 closed from Highway 138 to Sheep Creek, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department. Longtime residents of the area said they were worried they had never seen a fire in the area. “When you have fires coming from the south, through Lytle Creek, all the way to this area, they’re used to it, and although they’re no less frightening, it ‘s well known,” said Scott Berg, a Wrightwood resident. “And because this is unknown, we do not have fires that you see from this side very often and that is what worries most of the residents.” The causes of the fire remain under investigation.
