A 6-year-old boy who went missing last week while fishing with his family on the Merrimack River in Massachusetts has been found dead by a kayak, authorities say. The body of the child – whose mother drowned while trying to save him – was discovered Sunday afternoon in the waters between Amesbury and Newburyport. “We are deeply saddened to learn that the body of 6-year-old drowning victim Mas DeChhat has been retrieved from the Merrimack River today,” said Massachusetts State Police. “Our prayers are with him, Boua DeChhat’s mother who died trying to save him and the loved ones they left behind.” The kayaker who found the child, identified by Fox 25 Boston as Darin Kelsey, said he went out into the water on Sunday hoping to help those who first responded. Massachusetts State Police say the child “had been missing since he entered the water during his family’s Deer Island recreational visit on Thursday.” A helicopter also took part in the search on Friday, according to an image released by Massachusetts State Police.
