The board confirmed the death of 12th grade Stouffville District high school student Munira Chakera in a statement Monday morning, noting that staff were “devastated” by the news.
The circumstances of the conflict that cost Tsakera’s life are not immediately clear.
“Munira’s leadership and positive presence were felt by many at her school in Stouffville District Secondary School and throughout the area and the grief and sense of loss will affect many,” the statement said. “As a school committee, it is important to focus on providing support to students affected by the tragedy. In the coming days, the Board of Injury Support Team will be deployed to Munira’s school and other locations that may be directly affected.
Chakera was one of three student councilors who served on the York Region School Board for the 2021-2022 academic year.
In a message posted on Twitter, Education Minister Steven Lecce called Chakera “a brilliant, positive and strong student leader who will be greatly missed.”
“My heartfelt condolences to the YRDSB family and community,” he said.
The YRDSB said the flags at Stouffville County High School and all board offices will remain at half-mast until Chakera’s funeral.

We are saddened to hear of the tragic death of YRDSB Student Officer Munira Chakera. Our thoughts are with her family and her loved ones. We work closely with our schools to ensure that our students and staff are supported.
