The Tony Awards show is hosted by Broadway veteran Ariana DeBose, who recently starred in “West Side Story” and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. “A Strange Loop” has the most nominations this year with 11, including one for best musical. The play, which follows an aspiring playwright and his dizzying, personalized thoughts, won the Pulitzer Prize 2020 for Drama. Following are 10 nominations for the pop musical “MJ”, which takes place during a tour of Michael Jackson. “Paradise Square”, a musical that follows the deterioration of the relationship between Irish immigrants and Black New Yorkers in the 19th century, also scored 10 nominations. Last year marked a triumphant, albeit insignificant, return for Broadway, which was closed for more than a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The performances began to reopen in September 2021, although subsequent cases forced several performances to cancel performances.
