Initial police reports said seven vehicles were involved, but a police briefing said only three vehicles came in contact. Dave Thompson, supervisor of the Hamilton Paramedic Service, told CBC Hamilton this morning that all the vehicles believed to be involved did not collide with each other, “as they had to be diverted to avoid it”. Police say at about 7:30 p.m., a 61-year-old Hamilton was driving a 2003 Nissan sedan heading south on York Avenue (toward the center) to the bridge near the QEW Ramp. “He then entered the northern lanes and the footpath of a 2008 Jeep Liberty,” a police press release said. “The front of the driver of the Nissan vehicle hit the back of the driver of the Jeep.” Police say the jeep was “severely damaged” before stopping on the east curb. Officials say the Nissan turned counterclockwise on a 2022 Mercedes-Benz, with the front end of the Mercedes-Benz knocking on the passenger door of the Nissan. Both vehicles stopped on the sidewalk. Police say the 61-year-old man in the Nissan was pronounced dead on the spot. Thompson said a woman in her 20s was taken to hospital in stable condition, but police say two women in the back of the Mercedes-Benz were taken to hospital with minor injuries. Police say damage and speed are not yet ruled out as causes of the crash. The CBC is asking police for clarity on some of the details of the crash. The collision closed the road for six hours. This is the 13th fatal car accident in the city this year and the second involving a driver. Witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are required to contact the Conflict Reconstruction Unit at 905-546-4753.
