The Aemet meteorological service said a mass of hot air from North Africa was sweeping Spain. The hottest areas are expected in central and southwestern Spain and the heatwave is expected to last at least until Wednesday. High 43 degrees Celsius is forecast for the southern cities of Seville, Cordoba and Badajoz. Meteorologists said the temperature in Madrid could reach 38 degrees Celsius, which is well above the average for early June, while the forecast high in coastal Barcelona is 32 degrees Celsius. The intense heat is very rare for the month of June “. Last year, Spain recorded the highest temperature since records began – 47.4 degrees Celsius in Montoro in the southern province of Cordoba in August. Vacationers are advised to be especially careful and avoid exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day. The Spanish Ministry of Health has issued the following tips to stay safe in extremely hot weather:

Drink water and fluids often Avoid caffeinated beverages or alcohol as they may promote dehydration Pay special attention to infants and young children, pregnant women and the elderly Try and stay in cool, shady places Reduce physical activity and avoid outdoor sports in the middle of the day Wear light, loose-fitting clothing Never leave anyone in a closed or parked vehicle Keep medicines in a cool and dry place Eat light meals that help replenish the salts lost through sweat

The Spanish heatwave is expected to head north towards the United Kingdom late next week. Although temperatures will not be as high, areas of the south of England could see temperatures as high as 30 degrees on Friday.

Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey said: “As we move towards the end of the week, we are starting to receive the signal that some significant heat may be coming from the south.” He said this was “still a long way off”, so there was still some uncertainty. However, Mr Vautrey added: “There is a signal that the heat we are currently experiencing over Spain – I think they are experiencing quite high temperatures at the moment – could be moving north to the south-east of the United Kingdom, at least for the end of the week “.
