Covington police received a call to 911 shortly before 11:30 p.m. Saturday about a man being shot in the area, Redlinger said, and officers met two unidentified minors, ages 11 and 12, as soon as they arrived at the scene. When police entered the house, they found the body of a woman and an elderly woman with multiple gunshot wounds. The elderly woman was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center and is in critical condition, Redlinger said. The two women found at Covington’s home were later identified as Jaquari’s mother and grandmother, according to Redlinger. “Darian Bennett was the one who shot the baby’s mother and took the baby with him and left the scene,” he added. An Amber Alert was issued by the GBI on behalf of the Newton County Sheriff’s Office for the missing toddler. On Sunday morning, Riverdale police received a call from a man who said he was about to commit suicide, Redlinger said. “Police were able to locate where the call came from and located a vehicle in the parking lot of a church and started looking for the man when they heard gunshots from the church,” he added. Police continued to search the area of the church kiosk in Riverdale, Redlinger said, and found the man – later identified as Bennett – and Jacquari, both shot dead. The GBI also confirmed the deaths of Bennett and Jaquari in a post on their Facebook page.
