A mother and grandmother were both arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a nine-year-old girl due to a serious case of lice. Sandra Kraykovich, 38, and Elizabeth Kraykovich, 64, were both charged with the death of the unnamed child. Court documents say emergency services arrived at their home in Tucson, Arizona, on June 22 and found the girl not responding with “a large amount of bugs in her face.” They added: “After a closer examination, it was discovered that there was a huge amount of lice in her hair.” Authorities say the text messages sent by the mother prove that she knew of her daughter’s condition, Law and Crime reported. She texted her boyfriend on March 14 and 15 about the issue and on March 21 she wrote: “OMG baby. Listen, I’m in my room and my mom called me. (adapted) she was asking if I could check on her to make sure she was not dying. ‘ Police said that although her boyfriend told her to take the girl to the hospital, she did not. One of her older children claimed she had tried to cure the lice using a mouthwash.

The grandmother is also accused as she allegedly knew the seriousness of the situation. He had talked about calling 911, but he did not, and sent a message to Sandra that the girl “can not go to the ER with her hair, but this is for me because you are not home.” The autopsy found that the girl died of anemia associated with a head lice infection. He found that malnutrition was also a contributing factor. The overall cause of death of the girl was given as negligence by the medical examiner of Pima County. Following the arrest of the two women, Sandra’s other two older children, who also had lice, were placed in the care of other family members.
