The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Sunday that a 1-year-old girl from Covington at the center of the Amber Alert and the suspect accused of her abduction have died. Officials say the Newton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the abduction of one-year-old Jaquari Bennett, who was allegedly abducted Saturday at a home on Chandler Field Drive in Newton County. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office said Darain Javaris Bennett, 38, the father of the young man, shot and killed the child’s mother at home. The child’s grandmother was also injured and told police Darain Bennett took the child.
Toddler in Georgia Amber Alert in ‘extreme danger’
The toddler and the suspect are believed to have been traveling in a black Honda Accord. If you see them, call 911. Newton County Sheriff’s Office said Darain Bennett called law enforcement that he was with the baby at a church on Riverdale Road and Adams Drive in Clayton County, threatening to harm the child and himself. The sheriff’s office said the man shot the child before turning the gun on himself. Authorities had earlier warned that they were probably traveling in a black 2007 Honda Accord RGJ4146. The GBI confirmed the death of the toddler in a tweet on Sunday. The black Honda Accord driven by the suspect was still at the scene on Sunday morning. Chronology of Covington, Georgia, Amber Alert
First, investigators say a 911 came from a Covington home around 11:14 p.m. Saturday night. It was then that the MPs who responded found a woman shot dead and the victim’s mother injured. He went to the hospital by helicopter. She allegedly told investigators that her granddaughter’s child had been abducted. The orange notices for a black Honda Accord outside Covington went out overnight. Newton County Sheriff’s Office said the child’s father called 911 from Clayton County around 7:30 a.m. Sunday and said he would shoot the child and himself.
