The brother and sister then went to stand outside with their neighbors to watch as paramedics worked on one of the five people injured in the shooting, which began at about 3:20 p.m. on an alley outside block 8600 on South Damen Avenue, authorities said. All five victims were in the street when at least one gunman opened fire from a car that approached them and then fled, Chicago police said.
One of the victims, a 29-year-old, later died of his injuries, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman said. The office of Cook County Medical Examiner confirmed the death, but did not release further information. “They were trying to save him, but he was already in a body bag,” Darley Scott said of the man he saw being treated by paramedics.
Two men, aged 30 and 24, were taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, a fire department spokesman said. A 24-year-old man was taken to the same hospital in good condition. Another 29-year-old man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, the spokesman said. James Scott, a retired 76-year-old veteran who has served two tours in Vietnam, said he was tired of hearing gunshots in his neighborhood as he watched the scene on Saturday afternoon. “I do not want to hear gunshots anymore, I’m bored,” said Scott.
