Schurr was released on bail earlier on Friday, June 10. Grand Rapids police confirmed that they responded around 8:15 p.m. at 900 block on Monroe Avenue NW for disturbance. There was no other information and it was not clear if anyone was detained. City Manager Mark Washington issued a statement Saturday calling the group’s tactics “unacceptable” because they appeared on someone’s private property and did what he described as threatening remarks. He estimated that 15-20 people were in the group and said that someone used a bullhorn. “These tactics and attempts at harassment and intimidation will not be tolerated nor will intimidation affect my judgment in the performance of my duties as City Manager,” he wrote. In a case that draws national attention, Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr was arrested Thursday on a second-degree murder charge for killing 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya by shooting him April 4 during a traffic stop. Lyoya and Schurr had a fight over the officer’s Taser and Schurr was on Lyoya when he fired. A judge issued a $ 100,000 bond during a lawsuit on Friday, and Schurr issued it the same day. He was housed in Calhoun County Jail and was released. Washington announced on Thursday that Schurr had been suspended without pay. The closing hearing is scheduled for June 16. On Saturday, he said he believed some of the people who showed up at his home were armed. “As I have dedicated my life to public service, I am no stranger to public scrutiny and criticism, but that does not mean that my family and I do not have the same expectation of privacy and security in our home as anyone else,” he wrote.
