Prochazka had some brilliant moments throughout the match, displaying his trademark unorthodox blow to blow up Teixeira. But for all his challenging moments, Teixeira had an answer at every turn, scoring takedowns and hitting Prochazka on the ground. Prochazka was left with a huge cut in his left eye by Teixeira hitting hard from the mountain, but whenever Teixeira seemed to be in control, Prochazka found a way to escape the problem and stand on his own two feet. Not only did Prochazka survive on the ground, in many parts of the match, Prochazka was the man in control on the floor, landing his own breaking ground and pound to draw blood from the Brazilian legend. Then came the last round. With the fight seemingly in balance, Teixeira put the fight on the ground and seemed to be in complete control until Prochazka was able to kick the cage and reverse the position. Shockingly, Prochazka saw Teixeira’s exposed neck and locked himself in the back bare choke, squeezing with everything he had to push the tap at 4:32 in Round 5. “Like I said, before the race, I’m ready to finish it in the first or fifth round,” Prochazka said after the race. “It does not matter. And it does not matter what technique.” What really made the finish may have been a particular uproar from Prochazka two rounds ago. With Teixeira leaning against the cage, Prochazka changed his focus on the body, piercing Teixeira with heavy fists and knees. Teixeira shot for a takedown out of desperation and fought well, but the work on the body clearly had an impact. Teixeira admitted the same after the fight, citing a severe weight loss, but said it was no excuse before saying that Prochazka’s body shots had exhausted his strength and left him unable to cope with the final submission. Prochazka has now won 13 consecutive matches, all but one coming with a break. The submission was just the third in Prochazka’s career and the first since 2014. The fight with Teixeira was only Prochazka’s third in the UFC, making him one of the fastest in UFC history to ever win a title. Teixeira said after the fight that he planned to fight, causing loud applause from the Singapore crowd. The defeat broke a six-game winning streak for the 42-year-old, who, unlike Prochazka, took 21 fights in the Octagon to become world champions.
